SuperValu Inc.

SuperValu Inc.

SuperValu is the third largest food retailer and distributor in the U.S.A. It was founded in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1926, as a result of the merger of two other companies (both owned by B.S. Bull & Co., which had in turn been founded back in 1870 as a dry goods wholesaler). The Winston & Newell Company -as the newly formed merger had been baptized-, left its charter member status at the Independent Grocers Alliance in 1928 in an attempt to function as a chain of independently owned stores operating under the “U-Save” and “Super Valu” banners.

The established work method achieved such success that the decision was made to change the company’s name to “Super Valu Inc.” in 1952 (the further spelling modification of the corporate name took place in the year 1992).
The business’ growth was given, to a great extent, due to the acquisition of several other chains, a process that started in 1971, with the purchase of Shopko (a discount chain), followed by Hornbacher’s, Cub Foods, Scott’s Food & Pharmacy, etc. In 2006, SuperValu bought Albertsons, Inc., a supermarket chain that comprises 1,124 stores located in 11 different U.S. states.

The company was chosen as the “Top Wholesaler” in 2008. It currently operates 2,505 food/drug stores, 878 in-store pharmacies, and over 100 fuel centers across the U.S.A.
