Staples, Inc.

Staples, Inc.

Staples Inc. was started by ex-retail-supermarket-industry rivals Leo Kahn, a Massachusetts entrepreneur who had also been in charge of the foundation of what later came to be the world’s leading natural and organic foods supermarket chain (Whole Foods Market), and Thomas G. Stemberg, a venture capitalist and executive with experience in the grocery store business, who came up with the original idea for the business after noticing that the high prices that were charged by small retailers and comparing them with the same wholesale products’ costs. Stemberg came to the conclusion that a specialized office supply store could yield considerable profits if the consumer prices were lowered and the demand, increased. The company’s first store was opened in the year 1986, in the outskirts of Boston.

Additional to selling office supplies, furniture, technology, cleaning and breakroom products; Staples offers its customers a series of exclusive services such as a full-service copy and print center in each of their stores (Copy&Print); a dedicated express delivery department where orders that are equal or higher than US$50 are delivered free of charge (BusinessDelivery); a special contact center where customers can call in order to have PCs and/or networking services designed by certified professionals -either at their very workplaces or at any Staples store- (EasyTech); and a special program that rewards returning customers by giving them special discounts and other benefits each time they make a purchase, upgrade their accounts, or even recycle ink toners (StaplesRewards).

The company is currently the largest of its kind, and it occupies the world’s second place in eCommerce sales.
