Sempra Energy is an energy services holding company created in 1998 by a merger of two long-established companies: Los Angeles-based Pacific Enterprises and Enova Corporation whose histories date back to more than a century.

The company business is divided in two categories: Sempra Utilities which serve more than 20 million consumers- this category includes San Diego Gas & Electric Co. and Southern California Gas Co- and Sempra Global that develops and operates critical energy infrastructure and provide gas and electricity; this category includes Sempra Generation, Sempra Pipelines & Storage, and Sempra LNG.

Sempra Energy is the largest natural gas utility in the United States and it has the longest coverage area and population served; this helped the company to become the major international force in natural gas markets.
