Sears Holdings Corporation

Sears Holdings Corporation

Sears Holdings Corporation, one of the largest retailers in the United States, was formed as a result of the merger of Kmart Holdings Corporation and Sears, Roebuck & Co., in the year 2005. The company operates a total of approximately 4,000 retail stores under different banners, including Sears and Kmart -and all of its many variants-, as well as Land’s End, The Great Indoors, and A&E Factory Services, among the most important. It also launched, in 2009, an online store that offers groceries, appliances, personal care products, household essentials, books, furniture, clothing, shoes and even automotive products, with the benefit of immediate delivery and/or the chance to pick up the on-line purchased goods in nearby convenience stores, free of charge (mygofer.com).

The Corporation claims to occupy the first place in home appliance, tools, automotive maintenance, and gardening equipment retail as well as being the number one in being the home services provider in the U.S. It is to be noted that Sears Holdings owns a website (Serviceline.com) that connects individuals who are interested in carrying out home improvement projects with a total of over 40,000 independent contractors (charging a commission of 10% the contract price upon service completion).

Sears also has subsidiaries outside the United States. It owns 15% of the Sears Roebuck Mexico department store chain, and more than 90% of Sears Canada Inc. common shares.
