Pathmark Stores Inc was born as an initiative of the Wakefern Food Corporation which wanted to organize a big supermarket chain to compete with other important retailers companies and food chains in the country. The name of the new sub group in the corporation was called Supermarkets General. In 1966, the company reached the impressive amount of $ 420 million American Dollars in sales. In 1968, the company changed its name to Pathmark and it decided to become an independent company.


Even though, Supermarkets General acquired several big corporation such as Gerung’s department Store and Rickel Home Centers among others; Pathmark was the most successful and major operation at that time. In fact, Pathmark included in that year more than 30 drugstores, 20 supermarkets and 10 gasoline stations approximately. In October, 1971, the corporation had a massive expansion of 91 supermarkets.


In 1978, the company was considered as one of the best supermarkets chains in New York because of its efficient service, lower prices and excellent products. Pathmark Stores Inc was acquired by A&P (the Great Atlantic and Pacific company) in 2007.
