Merck & Co.

Merck & Co.

Merck & Co. traces its origins as an independent entity back to the year 1917, after it was confiscated from its parent firm, the world’s oldest pharmaceutical company, as were many other German assets in the United States, following World War I. The American version grew out to be even bigger than its ancestor with a current presence in 120 countries, and a total of 31 factories around the globe.

The company is dedicated to the development, production, and marketing of medicines, vaccines, biological therapies, consumer health and animal products. Among its most remarkable products are: Antivenin (for black widow spider bites), Arcoxia (for the treatment of osteoarthritis), Cospot (for intraocular pressure), Gardasil (for sexually transmitted diseases such as the human papillomavirus), Isentress (an HIV antiretroviral drug), Pneumonax 23 (vaccine for pneumonia and septicaemia), Propecia (for the treatment of male baldness), Proscar (for prostatic conditions), Vacta (vaccine for hepatitis A), Zostavax (for the prevention of herpes zoster -skin rash- in adults over 50 years old), Coppertone (skin care line), Dr. Scholl’s (foot care), Quazepam (insomnia medication), Home Again Pet Recovery System (electronic pet tagging system), Bain de Soleil (sunscreen for adult females), Mirtazapine (antidepressant), etc.

In November 2009, Merck & Co. was acquired by the Schering-Plough Corporation, a former competitor, in a US$41 billion deal. The company became a subsidiary of Schering-Plough, with the newly-formed alliance that took the name of the first, a process that is known as “reverse merger”.
