McKesson Corporation

McKesson Corporation

Originally founded as Olcott & McKesson, the company started importing and wholesaling botanical drugs in the year 1833. Upon the death of Charles Olcott in 1853, John McKesson partnered with Daniel Robbins, and the company changed its name to McKesson & Robbins. During this time, it was involved in a financial scandal, from which it re-emerged after the offender Phillip Musica’s prosecution and unfortunate suicide. McKesson started deriving the greater part of its profits from medical technology devices rather than pharmaceutical products from around 1950, and changed its name back to only McKesson in the year 2001.

The company owns Health Mart; a pharmacy network formed by more than 2500 stores, as well as various subsidiaries in other countries. McKesson Canada, for example, was established after the purchase of Medis Health and Pharmaceutical Services in 1991. In the United Kingdom, McKesson operates under the name of McKesson Information Solutions UK Ltd, and provides information technology services to several health care entities. Among such services, the company is in charge of the National Health Service’s electronic staff record, which -integrating almost a million and a half employees- is the world’s largest payroll IT system.

In Australia and New Zealand, McKesson provides several telephone-based services to hospitals and clinics, some of which include: telephone triage (health care delivery through telephone lines), mental health triage and case management, health information, and chronic disease management. McKesson is currently the largest health care company, not only in the U.S. but also in the entire world.
