Marathon Oil Corporation

Marathon Oil Corporation

Originally founded in the year 1887 as The Ohio Oil Co., the business momentarily changed hands after only two years of its creation, when it was acquired by Standard Oil, part of John D. Rockefeller’s trust and company to which it belonged until 1911 -year in which the U.S. Supreme Court required for the latter to be broken into smaller independent businesses-. The Ohio Co. became “Marathon” after buying the Transcontinental Oil Company in the year 1930; its name was once more changed (from “Marathon” to “Marathon Oil Company”) in 1962. The company became a subsidiary of the United States Steel Corporation (later renamed USX Corporation) in 1982; it finally established itself as a standalone business in the year 2002, under the name of “Marathon Oil Corporation”.

Marathon has refineries in Robinson, Illinois; Canton, Ohio; Detroit, Michigan; Garyville, Lousiana; Catlettsburg, Kentucky and Texas City, Texas. Under a recent agreement with The Pantry Inc., a convenience stores chain that operates throughout the southwest of the U.S., Marathon is scheduled to supply fuel to more than 600 outlets. As of 2011, the company had established Marathon Petroleum Corporation as a separate business (spin-off) based on the city of Finlay, Ohio, whereas its own headquarters remained in Houston, Texas.
