Level 3 Communications

Originally created in 1985 under the name of Kiewit Diversified Group as a subsidiary of construction/mining company Peter Kiewit Sons’ Inc, and meant to take care of the latter’s non-construction related business, Level 3 took the name that it still holds in the year 1998, after having the services that they offered gradually while gaining relevance and demand. It was also in this year that the company made an initial public offering in the stock market (NASDAQ) and raised $14 billion, thus turning into the “best funded start-up in history.”

The growth of the company came mainly through the purchase of several other businesses, namely: Genuity, WilTel Communications, Broadwing Corporation, Looking Glass Networks, Progress Telecom and Telcove; all of which were either web hosting dedicated businesses, telephone companies, Internet service providers, media solutions companies, and the like. By October 2011, Level 3 had also finished acquiring Global Crossing Limited, a fellow telecommunications company; that way, the company integrated a total of more than 450 core network markets worldwide.

Level 3 is one of the world’s top three Internet traffic carriers; it provides core transport, IP, video, voice and content delivery for Internet carriers in America, Europe, and certain Asian cities. It employs submarine telecommunications cable systems that cross the Atlantic and operates a Tier 1 network.
