Leggett & Platt, Inc.

Leggett & Platt, Inc.

Leggett & Platt was born from the partnership formed in 1883 by J.P. Leggett and C.B. Platt, who started working together after Leggett developed an idea for a new kind of bedspring and solicited Platt’s help to manufacture it. The final product was patented in 1885 and it became very successful because it was the most comfortable type of bedspring that had been made available to date. Leggett and Platt opened their first factory in Carthage -their hometown- in 1895, with a total of only 5 employees. Other plants were built in Louisville, Winchester (Kentucky), and Ennis (Texas) during the following years.

The company started diversifying and manufacturing other products -most importantly springs for innerspring mattresses- in 1933. Later, in 1960, an extensive evaluation of the company’s potential took place and determined that the future of the company was to be focused on the manufacturing, marketing and distributing of a broad line of components, both nationally and internationally. The strategy seems to be proving effective to this day, with the company being the leading U.S. manufacturer of residential and office furniture, drawn steel wire, automotive seat support systems, and bedding industry machinery, etc.
