First Student, Inc.

First Student, Inc.

First Student, Inc., is the largest student transportation company in the United States. Part of First Group, a Scottish bus, rail and tram operator with subsidiaries in the United States, First Student is present in 42 different U.S. states (as well as in 8 Canadian states) and it has a fleet of more than 60,000 vehicles, which serve as transportation for a total of around 6 million students every day.

The company was created in 1999 through the acquisition of several American school bus contractors (the first one of which was Ryder). In time, First Student became (along with Laidlaw Education Services), one of the two largest private school bus operators in the United States. Its final consolidation came in the year 2007, after First group purchased Laidlaw International Inc.

Laidlaw had been, up to that moment, the leading transportation company in the U.S., and it had been dedicated not only to student bus services but also to public transit, paratransit, trucking and intercity bus services. All of the aforementioned were, upon attainment, given a different name by First Group (for instance, Laidlaw Transit became First Transit). It was at this point that Laidlaw Education Services merged into the already existing First Student.
