BellSouth Corporation

BellSouth Corporation

BellSouth Corporation, an American telecommunications company, is operating since 1984 and it is one of the seven regional Bell Companies that AT&T (the American Telephone & Telegraph Company) operated until the U.S. Department of Justice forced it to strip itself from its regional subsidiaries on January 1984. BellSouth Corporation was one of the last AT&T Companies to keep its original corporate name after its breakup from its holding company.

However, BellSouth Corporation rejoined AT&T Inc. (one of the seventh Bell Companies that was originally named Southwestern Bell) on December 29, 2006; after announcing it on March 5, 2006, with nine months in advance. This fusion resulted in the acquisition of Cingular Wireless and YELLOWPAGES.COM, which were both combined schemes between BellSouth and AT&T.

The merger consolidated the name of the Combined Company as AT&T, and BellSouth became formally known as AT&T South; it ceased all the businesses under the BellSouth Brand on June 30, 2007.

Before the fusion, BellSouth functioned in the Australian and New Zealand market under the names of BellSouth New Zealand and BellSouth Australia Pty Limited. However, its location in New Zealand was acquired by Vodafone in 1998, and its Australian ventures had a similar fate no long after.
